The Media

This may get too wonky, but I watched the morning political shows.

William Safire of The New York Times has done again. He lied on Meet The Press. He said, "under Democratic Presidents you get higher taxes and under Republican Presidents you get lower taxes." This isn't true. During the last 24 years, every President has raised taxes (except for Bush II). Reagan raised taxes more than once. I don't know the facts prior to 1980. But since then, the Democratic Presidents (Clinton) have been more fiscally responsible than all of the Republican Presidents. The budgets were balanced, you had a pay as you go system with the budget. It was sound and responsible. Under Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II you do not have this.

Tim Russert let this assertion go by Mr. Safire. The is continued and Mr. Russert and every other commentator on the show is complicit. This is because the right has convinced America that they are the party of lower taxes. The facts do not agree with that statement. And the media is partly responsible for this. How can this be called accurate Journalism????

Frank Rich has a great column today in the Times http://www.nytimes.com/2005/01/02/arts/02rich.html?8hpib. Once again, he's writing about Washington, the Media, and the War. He compares Washington January 1945 to January 2005. Good analysis.
