Changes

I was watching the Today show this morning and Mary Matalin was on discussing the staff changes at the White House. She is the ultimate spin meister. I have to say she had too much make-up on.

But, I couldn't buy what she was selling. She kept going on that change is good, loyalty is only one factor in considering these people, and we need people with considerable policy experience to come in at this point to continue the hard work that the administration is doing. I don't know if anybody else was buying it. It was really annoying. I don't know why the Today show chooses to ask her about these issues.

On a similar note, The Daily Show did this hilarious spoof of "The Decider-in-Chief" as a comic book last night. The plot of the comic was that all of the decisions made by "The Decider-in-Chief" over the last 5 years turned out to be wrong, but at least he is decisive. It ended with The Decider having to choose between saving Barney, his dog, and his mother from a sinking ship. He chose Barney. This seems to be more on target...and it was funny.

Poseidon

Ok, when I heard that not one but TWO remakes were in production of the classic 1973 film "The Poseidon Adventure", I couldn't decide if I wanted to A) lose all hope that Hollywood would be able to produce new content B) mourn the passing of Shelley Winters while humming "The Morning After" (this isn't really true because when I heard they were making these movies Ms. Winters was still with us) or 3) just throw-up and die.

After watching the made-for-TV movie on NBC in November, I was really leaning towards number 3. But after viewing the current version of the trailer for the movie Poseidon, I've had a change of heart. The movie looks great.

The movie could end up being really bad, but the company that made the trailer gets huge kudos. The trailer is great.

My biggest gripe with the TV remake was I didn't care if any of the characters lived or died. In fact, I wanted them all to die. I was a little upset there were any survivors at all. For the film remake, after watching the trailer, I'm already emotionally attached. If you are going to remake a movie like this, it seems the best route is to create new characters with new storylines so we don't bring our histories to the new film, which it appears in the movie version they have done. The special effects may be better, but the direction and acting seems to be so much better as well. You get a real sense of urgency—this is life or death. This was absent for the TV movie. Well see.
